6. Kalvahagen quarry

Smedstorp parish is said to have had the most shale quarries, which were easily accessible. There were a number of small limestone quarries in this area. The quarry in the “calves field” is the one that was in use the longest. The last stone cutter, Nils Håkansson, cut shale stone by hand right up until the end of the 1970s. The stones were used in garden paths, walls, steps etc.
In one of the other quarries, Gårdlösa quarry, all landowners registered in Gårdlösa were entitled to quarry shale. Today it is a tradition that the men in Gårdlösa gather on the first of May every year to socialise at the Gårdlösa quarry.
